Short answer: a room in a shared villa in Bali runs 3.5–10 million IDR a month, a one-bedroom villa 7–24 million, and a two-bedroom with a private pool 12–45 million — depending entirely on area. Sanur and Ubud are cheapest; Berawa and Seminyak are most expensive. The bigger variable than area, though, is whether you pay the tourist rate or the resident rate, and that gap is 40–60%.

Reading this table properly: the bottom of each band is inland, off the main road, negotiated in person, low season, for three months or more. The top is on the main road, in July, booked from abroad. Same villa, both numbers.
The six rules that decide what you pay
1. Monthly beats nightly by 40–60%. A room advertised at 800,000 IDR a night is 24 million a month on paper and frequently 12 million if you ask the owner for a monthly rate. Booking platforms are built for nights, not months.
2. Book short, then look locally. Take 5–7 nights on a platform. Then find the real place: area Facebook and WhatsApp groups, riding the gangs looking for hand-painted signs, and asking at warungs. Almost every long-term resident found their villa this way, and almost nobody who booked a month from abroad got a good price.
3. Fifty metres inland is 20–30% cheaper. And quieter. The main road carries the premium and the noise together.
4. Long-term is a separate price list. Six months or a year is 20–30% below the monthly rate, and twelve months paid up front can be more again. If you know you are staying, say so at the first conversation.
5. Season is brutal. July, August and Christmas roughly double short-term rates and stiffen negotiation. April, May, September and October are the sweet spot — dry-season weather, low-season pricing.
6. Ask what is excluded. This is where cheap villas become expensive ones. See below.

Electricity is the trap. Aircon running all night in a villa with single-glazed windows and a tin roof section adds 1.5–2.5 million IDR a month. A 10 million villa with bad insulation costs more than a 12 million one that is built properly. Ask to see a previous month's bill.
Before you hand over money
A checklist that has saved people I know real amounts:
- Get it in writing. Even a simple agreement: dates, price, what is included, deposit amount and return terms.
- Photograph everything on move-in. Every mark, every appliance. Deposit disputes are the most common rental problem here.
- Test the wifi in the room you would work in, at 8pm, not at reception at 11am. Check upload and latency, not just download.
- Ask about construction next door. In Canggu and Pererenan this is not paranoia. Ride past at 7am if you can.
- Check the water pressure and the hot water. Both are commonly bad and rarely mentioned.
- Ask who else lives in the compound. A shared pool with a party villa attached is a different product.
- Never pay a large sum with no paperwork to someone who is not the owner. Ask to meet the owner or see proof of authority. Deposit scams exist, mostly targeting people arranging remotely.
- Check the road at 5:30pm. A villa that is 6 minutes from your gym off-peak may be 25 in the evening.

Coliving is underrated for a first month and overpriced for a sixth. It solves the two hardest problems on arrival — where do I sleep and who do I know — and then you graduate out of it.
What this means for your monthly total

Where the money leaks
Rent is not the only thing in Bali with a hidden resident rate. The pattern is identical across everything you buy weekly, and it is always unadvertised:
- Scooters: monthly 700,000–1,200,000 IDR against a daily rate of 70,000–100,000.
- Gyms and yoga: weekly and multi-class passes 30–50% below drop-ins, usually only at the desk.
- Spa and massage: the empty 1–4pm window runs 30–50% under the 6pm price for an identical treatment.
- Coworking: unlisted weekly rates below five day passes.
- Bars: 2-for-1 windows, roughly 4–7pm, that close before most people sit down.
- Pools: hotel day passes at half a beach club's minimum spend for the same swim.
