Short answer: Seminyak has the best cooking in Bali at every level above warung, and it charges for it — mains run 150,000–400,000 IDR against 90,000–200,000 in Canggu. The warung tier is unchanged at 35,000–60,000, but there are far fewer warungs in the centre, so most visitors never see that price.
Two things close most of the gap: going inland, and the early-dinner sets that run 30–40% below à la carte and appear on a chalkboard rather than online.

What things cost
| Meal | Warung (off the main streets) | Café | Restaurant | Beachfront / fine dining |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | 20,000–35,000 | 80,000–150,000 | 120,000–220,000 | 180,000–320,000 |
| Lunch | 35,000–60,000 | 100,000–180,000 | 150,000–300,000 | 220,000–450,000 |
| Dinner main | 35,000–60,000 | 110,000–200,000 | 150,000–400,000 | 300,000–800,000 |
| Coffee | 15,000–25,000 | 35,000–60,000 | 50,000–80,000 | 60,000–90,000 |
| Cocktail | — | 90,000–150,000 | 120,000–220,000 | 180,000–300,000 |
| Large local beer | 25,000–45,000 | 50,000–80,000 | 60,000–100,000 | 80,000–150,000 |
Plus service charge and government tax, commonly around 15–21% combined at cafés, restaurants and hotels. It should be stated on the menu — check before you calculate. Warungs do not add it.
The geography of price
This is the most useful thing to know about eating here, and it explains why Seminyak feels more expensive than it structurally is.
| Where | Character | Price level |
|---|---|---|
| Jalan Kayu Aya ("Eat Street") | The densest restaurant strip | High |
| Jalan Petitenget | Polished, best cocktails | Highest |
| Beachfront | Sunset premium | Highest |
| Double Six / Legian border | Broader, cheaper | Mid |
| Side streets off the main roads | Where the warungs are | Low |
| Kerobokan, inland | Where residents eat | Low–mid |
Central Seminyak is almost entirely restaurant tier, which is not true of Canggu or Ubud. If you only walk Kayu Aya, you will conclude that food here starts at 150,000 IDR. Fifty metres inland it starts at 35,000.
The discounts nobody publishes
1. Early-dinner sets, roughly 5–6:30pm. A fixed menu at 30–40% below the à la carte equivalent, used to fill the room before the main service. Chalkboard or verbal, rarely online. This is the biggest unadvertised food discount in Seminyak.
2. Quiet-weeknight promotions. Monday to Wednesday, particularly in low season. Ask.
3. The 4–7pm happy hour window, and Seminyak's rare 9–11pm weeknight second window. Because base drink prices here are 30–50% above Canggu, the same 2-for-1 saves considerably more money. See happy hour in Seminyak.
4. Lunch menus at restaurants that are expensive at dinner. Frequently the same kitchen at 40% less.
Where the warungs are
They exist, they are good, and you have to leave the main streets to find them.
- Side streets and gangs off Kayu Aya and Petitenget — small family places serving nasi campur at 35,000–55,000.
- Kerobokan, inland, where a large share of long-stay residents actually live and eat. Best warung density in the area.
- The Legian and Double Six side — cheaper and broader, shading toward Kuta pricing.
- Night stalls — satay, martabak, grilled corn, 15,000–60,000.
How to spot a good one: Indonesian customers at 1pm, a short or nonexistent menu, visible turnover. Full dish vocabulary in the warung guide.
What Seminyak is genuinely worth paying for
Being fair to the expensive tier, because this is not a page arguing you should never use it:
- The best cooking in Bali. Not marketing — the kitchens here operate at a level Canggu does not match, particularly for non-Indonesian food.
- Actual mixology. Seminyak's cocktail bars are the best on the island.
- Range. Japanese, Italian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, modern Indonesian, all done properly.
- The occasion dinner. If you want one genuinely excellent meal on a Bali trip, this is where to have it.
The point is proportion: eat cheaply during the day, eat well when you have decided to.
A realistic weekly food budget
| Pattern | Weekly IDR | Monthly IDR |
|---|---|---|
| Warungs and inland cafés | 700,000–1,100,000 | 3,000,000–4,700,000 |
| Mixed — warung lunch, restaurant dinner | 1,400,000–2,200,000 | 6,000,000–9,500,000 |
| Restaurant tier throughout | 2,300,000–3,500,000 | 9,900,000–15,000,000 |
The practical middle: warung or inland breakfast and lunch, restaurants two or three evenings a week. Saves 4–6 million IDR a month with no meaningful loss.
The honest negatives
- Central Seminyak has almost no cheap tier visible, which pushes people into restaurant pricing by default.
- Service charge and tax catch people out — a 200,000 main is a 240,000 line.
- Beachfront pricing is roughly double the identical dish 300 metres inland.
- Booking is needed at the good places in high season.
- Parking is a genuine problem, more than anywhere else in Bali.
- Delivery maths is poor at the low end — a 40,000 warung plate delivered lands near 65,000. Ride out for cheap food; deliver the expensive food.
- Fewer plant-based warung options than Ubud; the café tier covers it well. See vegan and vegetarian in Bali.
Where the money leaks
Two specific leaks here, both large because base prices are high: defaulting to the visible restaurant tier on the main streets, and missing the 5–6:30pm early set that is 30–40% cheaper for the same kitchen.
Seminyak also has the widest absolute unadvertised discounts in Bali across every other category — spa slots in the empty 1–4pm window at 30–50% off a 400,000 IDR treatment, hotel pool day passes at half a beach club minimum spend, and the late drinks window.
Last Call Bali tracks what Seminyak venues are discounting right now — food promotions, happy hours, day passes, spa slots — with a direct WhatsApp line to the venue. No commission, no booking fee, no card details.

How this page is verified
Price bands come from eating across all four tiers in Seminyak and Kerobokan and cross-checking with current residents, re-checked monthly.
We deliberately do not name restaurants. We take no commission or affiliate fees in this category, Seminyak's restaurant scene turns over quickly, and a stale list of names is less useful than the price structure and the geography — which tell you where to walk in any part of the area, including the streets no listicle covers.
