Gym Day Passes in Ubud and Uluwatu: Thin Markets, Different Answers

Small open-air gym with weights and a garden view in Bali

Short answer: neither Ubud nor the Bukit has anything like Canggu's fitness infrastructure, and each solves the gap differently. Ubud answers with yoga depth; the Bukit answers with surfing and coliving gyms. Day passes in both run 80,000–130,000 IDR and monthly memberships 900,000–1,600,000 — cheaper than Canggu, with a fraction of the choice.

And riding to Canggu to train is a real option from Pererenan or Seminyak, and not one from Ubud or the Bukit.

The break-even is the same everywhere in Bali: at about three sessions a week the monthly beats drop-ins, and above that it wins clearly. See gym day passes in Bali.

Ubud — yoga is the answer, not the gym

Gyms in Ubud are smaller, fewer and less equipped than Canggu's. If barbell work is central to your training, you will find something workable and you will not find a great room.

What Ubud has instead is the best yoga on the island, by a distance. Large studios running fifteen-plus classes a day across styles, plus sound healing, breathwork and workshops.

The pricing rule that matters: a multi-class pack cuts 25–40% off drop-ins and monthly unlimited pays off from about four classes a week. Neither is usually displayed online — you ask at the desk. See yoga in Bali: prices and retreats.

The practical Ubud setup: yoga four to six times a week on a pass, a small gym two or three times for strength, and the Campuhan Ridge at 6am for cardio. Total cost is well below a Canggu equivalent.

Also here: the best massage and treatment value in Bali at the mid tier, which matters more when your training is mat-based. See spa and recovery in Canggu and Ubud.

Uluwatu — surfing is the training

The Bukit's fitness scene is genuinely thin: a handful of small gyms, some resort facilities, and that is close to it.

What works down here:

  1. Surfing daily. Paddling is real conditioning, and if you are on the Bukit at intermediate level you are probably in the water five days a week. See surfing the Bukit.
  2. Coliving and resort gyms. This is the underused answer — several Bukit colivings and resorts have decent gyms and will sell access to non-residents. Ask directly; it is rarely advertised. See renting on the Bukit.
  3. A small local gym two or three times a week for strength work, at 80,000–130,000 a session or a monthly if you go more.
  4. Bodyweight and stairs. The Bukit is a peninsula of staircases; Bingin alone is roughly 150 steep steps each way.

What is missing: pilates, martial arts, ice baths, group classes, and any real range. If those matter, the Bukit is the wrong base.

When to ride to Canggu

From Each way Sustainable?
Pererenan 10–15 min Yes
Seminyak / Kerobokan 20–30 min Yes, a few times a week
Sanur 45–70 min No
Ubud 1h15m+ No
Uluwatu 1h15m–1h45m No

From Ubud or the Bukit, do not plan around Canggu. Over an hour each way is a commute nobody sustains past week two. Train with what is local and accept the smaller range — or, if fitness range is genuinely a top-three priority for you, base in Canggu. See where to base yourself in Bali.

The unadvertised discounts, same as everywhere

Three, and all three are asked for at the desk rather than found online:

  1. The weekly pass — 350,000–600,000 IDR against five drop-ins.
  2. The class pack — 25–40% below drop-ins for yoga, pilates and martial arts. The biggest one in this category.
  3. The three-month prepay — a further 15–25% below monthly.

The sentence is: "Is there a weekly pass or a class pack?" Or in Indonesian, "Ada paket mingguan?" — see basic Indonesian for Bali.

Good for / skip if

Ubud works if: your training is mat-based, you want yoga depth, or you are happy with a modest gym plus a hill to run.

The Bukit works if: you surf at intermediate level or above and treat strength work as a supplement rather than the main event.

Neither works if: you lift seriously, want classes and variety, or need a recovery scene. That is Canggu, and it is not close.

The honest negatives

  • Equipment quality and maintenance are more variable in both areas than in Canggu.
  • Open-air gyms with fans rather than aircon — check whether the weights area specifically is cooled before committing.
  • Class schedules are thinner, and the good Ubud yoga slots book a day ahead.
  • No refunds on memberships if you leave early. Buy the shorter product if there is any chance.
  • On the Bukit, isolation. Without a coliving or a surf crew, training alone every day gets quiet.
  • Always do one drop-in before buying a month, at the hour you would actually train.

Where the money leaks

The mechanic is identical across Bali: the drop-in rate is the tourist rate. Weekly passes and class packs run 25–50% below it, three-month prepays another 15–25%, and none of it is on a website.

The same runs through everything else in these areas — spa slots in the empty 1–4pm window at 30–50% off, jungle and resort pool day passes at a fraction of a beach club minimum spend, and villas 40–60% cheaper monthly than nightly.

How this page is verified

Prices come from contacting gyms, studios and colivings directly in Ubud, Penestanan, Pecatu, Ungasan and Uluwatu village, cross-checked with current residents, and re-checked monthly.

We say plainly that both areas are thin rather than padding a list with venues that technically have a bench. Where the infrastructure does not exist, the useful answer is what to do instead — yoga in Ubud, surfing and a coliving gym on the Bukit — and that is what this page gives.
