Short answer: Canggu is where the sports recovery is — physio, sports massage, ice baths, sauna, contrast therapy. Ubud is where the depth is — traditional treatments, better hands at the mid tier, and a wellness culture rather than a wellness product.
And in both, the same fact governs everything: a 60-minute massage at 2pm costs 30–50% less than the identical treatment at 6pm, from the same therapist, at the same place.

What Canggu is best at
Sports recovery, and it is the only place in Bali that really has it.
- Ice baths, saunas and contrast therapy studios — dedicated facilities rather than a hotel add-on. Memberships pay off from about twice a week.
- Sports massage and physio aimed at people who surf daily and train — shoulders, lower backs, and the specific damage paddling does.
- Chiropractic and rehab for the same market.
- Convenience. Everything within a 10-minute ride, and open late for the post-work crowd.
Why it exists here: Canggu has the highest concentration of people who surf every morning and train every afternoon. The recovery industry followed the demand. See gyms, yoga and recovery prices and sport in Bali beyond surfing.
What Ubud is best at
Depth, and hands.
- Better mid-tier quality for the money. A 200,000 IDR massage in Ubud is, on average, better than a 200,000 IDR massage in Canggu. Therapists here work in a longer-established treatment culture.
- Range — traditional Balinese treatments, lulur scrubs, herbal compress, cream bath, jamu.
- Sound healing, breathwork, meditation as a genuine scene rather than an occasional class.
- Yoga integration. Studio, treatment and practice in the same ecosystem. See yoga in Bali.
- Setting. A treatment room open onto a river valley is a different experience from one on a main road.
What it does not have: the ice bath and sports-recovery infrastructure. If your problem is a paddling shoulder rather than stress, Canggu is the answer.
The afternoon window, in detail
Every spa in Bali has the same daily shape:
| Time | Demand | Pricing pressure |
|---|---|---|
| 9am–12pm | Moderate | Some flexibility |
| 1pm–4pm | Near zero | 30–50% discount available |
| 5pm–9pm | Peak | Full price, often booked out |
Between 1 and 4pm, therapists are sitting outside. A treatment that costs 250,000 IDR at 6pm is routinely 130,000–180,000 in that window.
Some places have a formal afternoon rate. Most simply say yes when asked. The sentence is: "Do you have an afternoon price?" or "Ada harga siang?"
On a weekly massage habit over three months, that single question is worth well over two million rupiah. Full detail: spa and massage prices in Bali.
What the treatments actually are
Menus use these names loosely, so:
- Balinese massage — firm full-body work with long strokes, acupressure and gentle stretching, with oil. More pressure than Swedish, less than Thai.
- Deep tissue / sports — what you want after a week of paddling. Ask for it explicitly; standard Balinese pressure is not the same thing.
- Lulur — traditional turmeric and rice scrub, usually sold with a massage.
- Cream bath — a scalp and hair treatment, genuinely good and routinely misunderstood by visitors as a haircut.
- Herbal compress — heated bundles of herbs pressed into muscle. Excellent for surf shoulders.
- Reflexology — feet and lower legs, cheapest entry point, often in an open room.
On pressure: say what you want at the start, not halfway through. Lebih pelan is softer, lebih kuat is firmer.
Which to use, by what is wrong
| The problem | Where |
|---|---|
| Surf shoulders, paddling fatigue | Canggu — sports massage, ice bath |
| A specific injury | Canggu — physio |
| General tension and stress | Ubud — better hands at the mid tier |
| Sleep and nervous system | Ubud — sound healing, breathwork |
| Post-gym soreness | Canggu — contrast therapy |
| You just want to feel human again | Either, at 2pm |
The honest negatives
- Quality varies enormously at the cheap end in both areas. Busy is the signal — an empty spa at 5pm is empty for a reason.
- Upselling is common at the mid tier; a 60-minute booking becomes a package pitch. A polite no is fine.
- Ubud's "traditional healer" offerings range from genuine to entirely staged for visitors. Ask a resident, not a tour desk.
- Resort spas add service charge and tax, commonly 15–21%, which the quoted price often excludes.
- Open-room reflexology means no privacy.
- Canggu recovery studios book out for evening slots; the afternoon is both cheaper and emptier.
- You are paying for the room at the top end, not better hands. A 120,000 IDR massage at a busy local spa is frequently better than a 600,000 one at a resort.
Where the money leaks
This is the widest unadvertised discount in Bali, and it is available almost everywhere while being offered almost nowhere: the 1–4pm window at 30–50% off, multi-treatment packages at another 20–35%, quiet weekdays cheaper again, and resort spa-plus-pool bundles that beat buying either separately.
None of it is published, because publishing it would cannibalise the 6pm bookings.
Last Call Bali tracks what spas and recovery studios across Canggu, Pererenan, Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Sanur are discounting right now, with a direct WhatsApp line to the venue. No commission, no booking fee, no card details, and the venue keeps 100% of what you spend — which is precisely why they are willing to tell us today's real price.

How this page is verified
Prices come from contacting and visiting spas and recovery studios directly across Canggu, Pererenan and Ubud, cross-checked with current residents, and re-checked monthly. Ranges rather than single figures, because this category is negotiated and unusually time-of-day dependent.
The afternoon discount is stated as a pattern we have repeatedly confirmed by asking, not as a published rate — because it almost never is one. We also do not name spas or take commission in this category; the useful information is the price structure, the treatment vocabulary and the question that halves the bill.
