Short answer: a genuinely cheap month in Bali is 11–15 million IDR (~$670–910) and it is a real life — private room, scooter, gym, fast internet, surfing. Not a survival exercise. The difference between that and the 28–38 million most people end up spending is not luck; it is about twelve specific decisions, and almost all of them come down to asking for a rate nobody volunteers.
Last checked: 12 August 2026. Prices in Indonesian rupiah, roughly 16,500 to 1 USD.
The lean month, line by line
| Line | Monthly IDR |
|---|---|
| Room in a shared villa (monthly rate, off the main road) | 4,000,000–7,000,000 |
| Food — warungs, occasional café | 3,000,000–4,000,000 |
| Scooter (monthly rate) | 700,000–900,000 |
| Petrol | ~100,000 |
| eSIM / data | 100,000–200,000 |
| Gym (monthly, not drop-ins) | 900,000–1,600,000 |
| Laundry (kilo rate) | 150,000–250,000 |
| Occasional Gojek | 200,000 |
| Going out, modest | 800,000–1,500,000 |
| Total | ~11,000,000–15,000,000 |
What is not in there: insurance (budget $50–120/month, and do not skip it), visa costs, flights, and the first-month extras below.
Where to be cheap
| Area | Room in shared villa | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sanur | 3,500,000–6,000,000 | Cheapest in south Bali, walkable, calm swimming |
| Ubud (Penestanan, Nyuh Kuning) | 3,500,000–6,000,000 | Cheapest overall once food and wellness count |
| Pererenan / Nelayan | 4,000,000–8,000,000 | Cheapest part of Canggu |
| Kerobokan | 4,500,000–8,000,000 | Inland Seminyak, same access, lower rent |
| Berawa, Seminyak, Bukit-with-a-view | 5,000,000–11,000,000 | Where budgets go to die |

The twelve decisions
1. Never take a daily rate on anything you will use for a week. Scooters, villas, gyms, coworking — monthly is 40–60% below daily multiplied out. This one decision is worth more than the other eleven combined.
2. Ask for the weekly pass or class pack. Gyms, yoga, pilates, coworking all have them at 25–50% below drop-ins. Almost none are on a website.
3. Book 5–7 nights, then find the real place on the ground. Facebook and WhatsApp groups, riding the lanes looking for signs, asking at warungs. Booking a month from abroad is the single most expensive mistake here.
4. Go fifty metres off the main road. 20–30% cheaper and quieter, everywhere on the island.
5. Eat breakfast and lunch at warungs. 30,000–50,000 IDR against 90,000–180,000. Dinner wherever you like. Saves 3–4 million a month with no real loss.
6. Book massage at 2pm, not 6pm. The empty 1–4pm window is 30–50% cheaper for the identical treatment. See spa prices.
7. Sit down at 5pm. The 4–7pm happy hour window closes before most people arrive. In Seminyak there is also a 9–11pm weeknight window nobody knows about.
8. Hotel pool day pass, not beach club minimum spend. 150,000–350,000 IDR against 500,000–2,500,000 for the same swim.
9. Work from free cafés, not coworking — unless you work five days a week, at which point the membership costs the same as the café food you were buying anyway.
10. Buy your SIM at an official store, not the airport. Several times cheaper for the same data.
11. Draw maximum cash per ATM withdrawal and always decline the machine's currency conversion. Fees are per transaction, and the machine's exchange rate is consistently worse than your bank's.
12. Come in the shoulder or wet season. April, May, September, October for dry-season weather at low-season prices. November–March excluding Christmas is cheapest outright.
What a lean day actually looks like
| Time | Activity | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 6:30am | Surf, own board or 150,000 full-day rental | 0–150,000 |
| 8:30am | Warung breakfast + coffee | 35,000 |
| 9:30am–3pm | Work from a free café (Zin-style), one coffee + lunch | 90,000 |
| 4pm | Gym on a monthly membership | 0 |
| 5:30pm | Sunset, warung beer at Echo | 35,000 |
| 8pm | Warung dinner | 45,000 |
| Total | ~205,000–355,000 IDR |
That is roughly $12–21 for a full day including surfing, working, training and a sunset beer.
The false economies
Things that look cheap and cost more:
- Skipping insurance. Routine clinic care is 200,000–500,000 IDR, but an evacuation is five figures in dollars. This is not a saving, it is a bet. See healthcare in Bali.
- The cheapest scooter. Bad brakes and bald tyres in wet season is how a budget month becomes a hospital month.
- Not buying your own helmet. 250,000–500,000 once, and it is both a safety and a hygiene upgrade.
- A villa with cheap rent and separate electricity. Aircon in a badly insulated place adds 1,500,000–2,500,000 a month; a 10M villa can cost more than a 12M one.
- Leaving your passport as a rental deposit. Costs nothing until it costs everything in leverage.
- The cheapest possible room, far from everything. You will spend the difference in Gojek fares and misery.
- Never going out at all. A social base is genuinely how you find the cheap villa, the good warung and the guy who fixes scooters properly.
What a first month costs extra
Budget 4–6 million IDR on top:
- Deposit, usually one month
- A short, expensive stay while you look for the long one
- Helmet, phone holder, dry bag, plugs, kitchen basics
- The social month — meeting everyone costs money
- One expensive mistake. Everyone has one.
Good for / skip if
This works if: you are staying a month or more, you can ride a scooter, and you are comfortable eating Indonesian food most days.
It does not work if: you are here for ten days (none of the monthly rates apply to you), you need aircon and a pool at all times, or your work requires guaranteed premium internet — that is a Canggu villa on fibre, not a 4 million room.
The honest negatives
- Cheap rooms are noisier, hotter and further out. That is what you are trading.
- Warung food is repetitive by week three.
- A lean month is less social, and in Bali the social layer is where a lot of practical information lives.
- Wet season is cheapest and is genuinely humid, with mosquitoes and occasional flooding.
- Bali is not as cheap as it was. Canggu rent now compares to Chiang Mai and Da Nang, sometimes above. The food and transport are still cheap; accommodation is where the premium landed.
Where the money leaks
Every item on this page is a version of the same mechanic: the advertised price in Bali is the tourist rate, and the resident rate exists but is never displayed. Scooters, gyms, yoga, coworking, villas, spas, bars — all price 30–50% lower monthly, weekly or off-peak, available only by asking.
Last Call Bali exists to close that gap without you having to ask twenty counters: a live directory of what venues across Canggu, Pererenan, Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Sanur are discounting right now, with a direct WhatsApp line to the venue. No commission, no booking fee, no card details, and the venue keeps 100% of what you spend.

How this page is verified
The budget lines come from tracking what a lean month actually costs across Canggu, Ubud and Sanur, cross-checked against what current long-stay residents report, and re-verified quarterly. Ranges rather than single figures, because rent and rates are negotiated and seasonal. The false economies section is drawn from patterns we see repeatedly rather than from any single case, and the insurance point is stated as a risk rather than as advice — read your own policy.
