Short answer: Canggu if you want community, surf, the fastest internet in Bali and everything within a 10-minute ride. Ubud if you want to spend 25–35% less, concentrate, and have yoga and recovery built into your week. They are 1h15m–1h45m apart, which makes them separate bases rather than two halves of one stay — and most people staying over two months end up doing a few weeks in each.

What Canggu wins
Internet. Not close. Canggu café wifi routinely tests 50–90 Mbps with the fastest around 300, and it is consistent building to building. If you have six calls a day or ship large files, this decides it.
Community. The highest concentration of remote workers anywhere in Southeast Asia. You will have plans by day three, which matters more than people admit if you are travelling alone.
Infrastructure density. Cafés, coworking, gyms, surf schools, spas and warungs all within a 10-minute ride. Twelve options for everything means you can be picky on price.
Surf. Five breaks in two kilometres covering absolute beginner to real reef. See Canggu surf spots graded.
Food range. Wider at every price point.
What Ubud wins
Price. 25–35% less on rent for comparable space, and cheaper on food, yoga and treatments. Over three months that is a genuine several thousand dollars.
Focus. Nobody is going to talk you into a beach club Sunday. If your problem is that you go out too much, Ubud fixes it structurally.
Wellness depth. Not marketing — real depth. The Yoga Barn runs 15+ classes a day; multi-class passes bring the per-class cost to roughly 100,000–130,000 IDR. Sound healing, breathwork, recovery, Balinese healers.
Culture that is actually present. Offerings, processions and temple ceremonies weekly rather than never.
Quiet, relatively. Penestanan and Nyuh Kuning are considerably calmer than anywhere in Canggu.
What each is bad at
Canggu: no swimming (dark sand, shore dump, rips), constant construction noise, the 4–7pm traffic window, the most expensive rent outside Seminyak and the Bukit, and a social gravity that quietly costs 4–5 million IDR a month in drinks.
Ubud: internet variance is the real risk — two villas on the same lane can be very different, so test before you sign. No beach. Central traffic is narrow and bad, and some streets restrict Gojek and Grab pickups. Café seating capacity is smaller than Canggu's, so good tables go by mid-morning. Higher humidity, more rain, lanes that flood. Everything closes early.
The decision, in one paragraph each
Pick Canggu if it is your first stay in Bali, you take a lot of calls, you want to surf, you are travelling solo and want people fast, or your work needs guaranteed bandwidth.
Pick Ubud if your budget matters, you do deep focus work rather than meetings, you want wellness as routine, you are travelling as a couple, or you have already done Canggu and want the opposite.
Split if you are staying two months or more. Two to four weeks in each, monthly rate negotiated separately in each. This is what most long-stayers actually do, and it costs less than a single high-season month in Canggu.
Practical notes on doing both
- It is not a commute. 35–40 km, 1h15m–1h45m by car. Do not book a villa in Ubud and plan to surf Canggu in the mornings.
- Move with a week's overlap if you can, so you are searching for the second place while living in the first.
- Negotiate monthly in person at both ends. Monthly rates run 40–60% below the nightly rate multiplied out, and 6+ months is another 20–30% below.
- Season matters more than area. April–October favours Canggu (offshore mornings, dry). November–March means blown-out west coast mornings and heavy afternoon rain inland — Ubud is fine, and the east coast surf works.
Where the money leaks in both
Whichever you choose, your monthly total is set by whether you pay the tourist rate or the resident rate on the things you buy every week. Villas, scooters, gyms, yoga studios and coworking all price monthly and weekly rates 30–50% below the daily or drop-in rate, and almost none of it is published. Spa slots in the dead 1–4pm window run 30–50% under the evening price. Bars run 2-for-1 windows — 4–7pm in Canggu, usually earlier at 3–6pm in Ubud. Hotel and jungle pool day passes undercut beach club minimum spends by half.
Last Call Bali tracks what venues in both towns are discounting right now, with a direct WhatsApp line to the venue. No commission, no booking fee, no card details, and the venue keeps 100% of what you spend.

How this page is verified
Rent and coworking bands come from owners, agents, spaces and current residents, cross-checked and re-verified quarterly for rent and monthly for coworking. Speed figures are measured ranges rather than vendor claims. Travel times are measured on the ground, because mapping apps consistently underestimate both the Canggu evening and the Ubud centre. Corrections get a new last checked date.
