Short answer: Canggu if you are working remotely and want a community, coworking, laptop cafés and surf. Seminyak if you want the best food, spas and shopping in Bali, you work from your own villa, and you do not need people. They are 20–30 minutes apart and built for different lives.
For most people reading this — remote workers staying a month or more — Canggu wins, and it is not close. The interesting part is where Seminyak genuinely beats it.

What Canggu wins
Community. The highest concentration of remote workers anywhere in Southeast Asia. You will have plans by day three. In Seminyak you can spend a month and meet nobody in your situation — this is the single biggest difference and the one people underestimate before arriving.
Working infrastructure. Fifteen-plus laptop cafés with tested 50–90 Mbps wifi, several coworking spaces with phone booths at 150,000–250,000 IDR a day, and a culture where opening a laptop at 9am is normal. Fitness and recovery. Two large commercial gyms, multiple pilates studios, Muay Thai, CrossFit-style boxes, and the island's only real ice bath and sauna scene. See gym day passes in Bali.
Surf variety. Five breaks in two kilometres covering absolute beginner to real reef. Seminyak's beach break is fine for learning and that is roughly it.
Price on the everyday. Warungs are similar, but cafés, drinks, massage and gyms all sit meaningfully below Seminyak.
What Seminyak wins
Food. Genuinely the best cooking in Bali, at every level above warung. If eating well is a top-three priority, this is a real argument and Canggu does not match it.
Spas. International-standard treatments, and — because base prices are high — the widest absolute gap in Bali between the 6pm price and the empty 1–4pm window, which runs 30–50% cheaper for an identical treatment.
Cocktails and a grown-up evening. Actual mixology bars, proper clubs, and a 9–11pm weeknight happy hour window that barely exists elsewhere on the island.
Shopping. Boutiques on Kayu Aya and Petitenget, plus the malls toward Kuta. If you need to buy real things, this is where they are.
Hotel day passes. An enormous hotel stock competing for a smaller day-visitor market than the beach clubs, which makes pool passes at 200,000–500,000 IDR unusually good value.
Airport proximity. 25–40 minutes against Canggu's 40–60. Worth real money on arrival and departure days.
The beach, marginally. Wider golden sand, lifeguard posts in places. Still a surf coast with real rips — neither area is where you go to swim. That is the east coast.
The inland trick that changes the price answer
Both areas have a cheaper version of themselves one street back:
- Canggu → Pererenan or Nelayan, 10–20% below Berawa, quieter, with the best current work cafés. See Pererenan area guide.
- Seminyak → Kerobokan, 20–30% below central Seminyak for the same access. This is where most long-stay "Seminyak" residents actually live, and it substantially narrows the price gap between the two areas.
In both, going fifty metres off the main road is another 20–30% and considerably quieter.
The decision, in one line each
Pick Canggu if: you work remotely, you want people, you surf, or you are staying a month or more on a normal budget.
Pick Seminyak if: you work from your villa with few live calls, food and spas are why you are here, you are travelling as a couple, or it is a shorter higher-budget trip.
Pick Kerobokan if: you want Seminyak's food and access at closer to Canggu's rent, and you do not need a nomad community.
Split if you are here three months or more — a month in each is a genuinely different experience of the same island, and the monthly rate is negotiated separately either way.
The honest negatives
Canggu: constant construction noise (the number one reason people move after month one), the 4–7pm traffic window, no swimming, and a social gravity that quietly adds 3–5 million IDR a month in drinks.
Seminyak: no community, constant traffic plus genuine parking problems, club bass around Petitenget and Double Six, price creep in every default option, and no rice fields left — it feels like a city, which is either the appeal or the dealbreaker.
Where the money leaks in both
Whichever you pick, your monthly total is decided by whether you pay the tourist rate or the resident rate on what you buy weekly. Villas 40–60% cheaper monthly than nightly, scooters at 700,000–1,200,000 IDR a month against 70,000–100,000 a day, gyms and studios pricing weekly passes 30–50% below drop-ins, spa slots in the empty afternoon at 30–50% off, and hotel pool day passes at half a beach club minimum spend.
Seminyak's version of every one of those is a larger absolute saving, because the base prices are higher.
