Short answer: Pererenan is where people move after their first month in Canggu. Same infrastructure, five to ten minutes away, but with rice fields between the villa compounds instead of continuous construction. A one-bedroom villa runs 11–20 million IDR a month, and the current best work cafés on the island — Miel, Tribal, Noah, Koloni — are here or on the boundary. The trade-off you make is options and social energy.

Three things that decide what you pay:
- Distance from the main road. Fifty metres down a gang is a different price bracket, and quieter.
- Monthly vs nightly. A monthly rate is typically 40–60% below the nightly rate multiplied out. Book 5–7 nights first, then negotiate on the ground.
- Electricity. Often billed separately. Aircon running all night in a poorly insulated villa adds 1.5–2.5 million IDR a month. Ask before signing.

This is Pererenan's actual selling point and the reason its reputation shifted over the last two years.

Coworking: there is none of consequence inside Pererenan itself. The Canggu spaces — Outpost, Tropical Nomad, Dojo — are a 5–10 minute ride south. Day passes 150,000–250,000 IDR, hot desks 1,800,000–3,500,000 a month. See coworking prices in Canggu.
Connectivity: Telkomsel coverage across Pererenan is solid. Carry an eSIM as backup — café wifi here is fast until a router or the power dies, and both happen.
Traffic and walkability
Walkability: low. Pererenan is villa compounds and rice fields connected by narrow lanes. You will not walk to dinner. A scooter is effectively mandatory — 700,000–1,200,000 IDR a month, plus about 100,000 in petrol.
Traffic: manageable, which is the point. The Canggu 4–7pm crawl mostly happens south of here. Riding into Batu Bolong at 5:30pm still costs you 20 minutes, but you can leave at 4:45 and skip it entirely.

Surf
The break here is a reef-and-sand mix — quieter than Batu Bolong, less consistent, and occasionally very good. It is not a beginner spot. Board storage runs 250,000–400,000 IDR a month; several villas will let you keep boards for free.
Food
Pererenan's food scene has grown fast and is now genuinely good, with the same two-economy split as everywhere in Bali:
- Warungs off the main roads: 30,000–50,000 IDR for nasi campur. This is where the price of living here is decided.
- Café and restaurant tier: 90,000–180,000 IDR a main. Good, and it adds up to 7–9 million a month if it is your default.
- Coffee: 25,000–50,000 IDR depending on which side of that line you are on.
Groceries: local produce is cheap, imported anything is 2–3× European prices.
Gyms, yoga and recovery
Nothing large inside Pererenan; the Berawa gyms (drop-in 100,000–150,000 IDR, monthly 1,200,000–2,000,000) are a 10-minute ride. Smaller studios, Pilates and yoga rooms have opened locally and most price a weekly or multi-class pass below three drop-ins — available only if you ask at the desk rather than booking online.
Massage locally runs 120,000–250,000 IDR for 60 minutes, and the empty 1–4pm slots are routinely 30–50% cheaper than the same treatment at 6pm.
Good for / skip if
Good for you if:
- You are staying a month or more
- You work full days and want a low noise floor
- You have scooter confidence and do not mind riding to dinner
- You want Canggu's infrastructure without Canggu's 24-hour construction
- You are past the phase of wanting to meet forty people a week
Skip it if:
- It is your first two weeks in Bali — go central Canggu, you want density
- You do not want to ride a scooter daily
- You want nightlife walkable from bed
- You want to swim in the sea; this is a surf coast with dark sand and shore dump
- You need a large gym or coworking on your doorstep
The honest negatives
- It is building. Pererenan is on Canggu's trajectory about six years behind. Rents are climbing, land is being cleared, and the main roads are getting louder each season.
- No walkable core. There is no strip. Every trip is a ride.
- Fewer options. Four good work cafés is excellent — until the one you wanted is full and there is no fifth.
- Quiet cuts both ways. If you are travelling solo and want a social month, Pererenan will feel slow.
- Wet season. Inland lanes flood in short heavy bursts, and unsealed gangs turn to mud.
Where the money leaks in Pererenan
The pattern that decides your monthly total is not the area, it is whether you pay the tourist rate or the resident rate on the things you buy every week. Villas, scooters, gyms, yoga studios and coworking all price monthly and weekly rates 30–50% below the daily or drop-in rate — and almost none of it is published anywhere. Spa slots in the dead afternoon hours run 30–50% under the evening price. Bars run 2-for-1 windows from around 4pm to 7pm that close before most people sit down.
