Most guides describe Canggu as a laid-back surf village. It has not been that for about eight years. Canggu in 2026 is a sprawling, congested, extremely functional small city built around three things: surf, laptops, and food — with a beach club economy layered on top.
That sounds like a complaint. It is not. Canggu is the best place in Bali to land, because everything you need is within a 10-minute scooter ride and nobody is going to look at you strangely for anything you do.
Here is what it is actually good at.
Prices are 2026 and change fast, especially beach club minimum spends.
First: Canggu is four neighbourhoods, not one
Booking "Canggu" without checking which part is the most common mistake people make here.

Five minutes on a scooter separates all of them. Twenty-five minutes at 5:30pm.
Surf, honestly graded
Canggu is the reason most people come, and the breaks cover the full ladder within a 2km stretch of coast.
Batu Bolong — the beginner wave. Soft, slow, sand and soft reef, and a wall of surf schools renting 9-foot foamies. This is where you take your first lesson. It is crowded, and the crowd is 80% people who also cannot surf, which is exactly why it is safe.
Old Man's — next door, the longboard wave. Mellow, long, best at dawn. If you can already stand up, this is your morning.
Berawa — a step up. Punchier, better for practising actual turns once you are past the foam board.
Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan) — reef, and a real wave. Not a beginner spot even though it is 5 minutes from one. Best on a mid tide, and it gets territorial when it is good.

Honest note: the sand in Canggu is dark grey volcanic and it gets genuinely hot by 11am. Bring something for your feet.
The beach, and the beach clubs
Canggu's beach is not the postcard. It is black sand, often with a shore dump, and after heavy rain in wet season the river mouths push debris onto it. If you came to Bali for a turquoise swimming beach, you want Sanur, Nusa Dua or the Nusas — not here.
What Canggu's coast is exceptional at is sunset. Every evening, the whole town migrates west.
Where to watch it:
- Old Man's — the loud one. Plastic chairs, cold Bintang, a few hundred people. Cheapest good sunset in Bali.
- La Brisa — driftwood architecture, more expensive, no minimum spend most days if you sit at the bar.
- Echo Beach warungs — the local option. Nasi goreng, a big beer, and the same sun.
- The Lawn — polished, sofas, actual cocktails.
Beach clubs with day beds (Finns, Atlas, Vue) run on minimum spend, not entry: typically 500,000–1,500,000 IDR per bed depending on position and day, redeemable against food and drink. The economics only work if you were going to eat and drink that much anyway. If you just want a pool for a day, a hotel day pass is usually 40–60% cheaper — more on that below.
Working from Canggu
This is genuinely what Canggu is best in the world at, and it is worth saying plainly: the café wifi here is faster than most European home broadband.

Coworking if you need a real chair and a call booth: Outpost, Tropical Nomad and Dojo all sell day passes (roughly 150,000–250,000 IDR) and monthly memberships (1,800,000–3,500,000 IDR). The day pass is worth it for one specific thing: air conditioning plus a door you can close for a video call.
Carry a local eSIM as backup. Café wifi is fast until it is not, and Telkomsel coverage across Batu Bolong, Berawa and Pererenan is solid.
Gyms, yoga, and the fitness economy
Canggu is absurdly well served here. Body Factory and S2S in Berawa are the big commercial gyms; drop-in is 100,000–150,000 IDR, monthly 1,200,000–2,000,000 IDR. Samadi does the best yoga in the area and runs a good sliding-scale class pass. There are Muay Thai gyms, CrossFit boxes, and more Pilates studios than a town this size should support.
Almost all of them do a cheaper unadvertised multi-class or weekly pass if you ask at the desk rather than booking online.
Eating in Canggu
The range is the point. On one street you can eat for 30,000 IDR or 800,000.
Local, cheap, good:
- Any warung signposted "nasi campur" off the main roads — 30,000–50,000 IDR for a full plate.
- Warung Bu Mi and the Batu Bolong warungs — Balinese plates, under 60,000.
- Night pasar senggol stalls — satay, martabak, grilled corn, 15,000–40,000.
Mid-range Canggu classics: Crate for brunch (cheap, chaotic, 9–11am rush), Milk & Madu for garden and family space, Gigi Susu, Home Cafe.
Coffee taken seriously: Hungry Bird in Berawa roast their own and have won things. The Daun, Kawisari, Little Engine.
Practical rule: anything with a beach view costs roughly double the identical dish 300m inland.
Half-day trips from Canggu
When you want off the strip:
- Tanah Lot (~40 min) — the sea temple. Touristy, still striking at sunset, ~75,000 IDR.
- Tibubeneng and Nyanyi rice field loops — no ticket needed, just ride north and turn inland.
- Nungnung waterfall (~1h20m) — the closest serious waterfall to Canggu. 50m single drop, ~20,000 IDR, 500 steps down.
- Uluwatu day (~1h15m) — cliff temple, Kecak at sunset, completely different landscape.
- Seminyak (~25 min) — for a proper shopping afternoon.
A first week in Canggu
Mornings: surf 6:30–8:30 at Batu Bolong or Old Man's, breakfast after. Middays: work from Zin, Miel or Tribal. This is when the heat makes everything else unpleasant anyway. Late afternoon: gym, yoga, or a massage. 5pm: sunset. Leave before the traffic sets, not after. Evening: warung, or the Berawa restaurant strip, or Pererenan for something quieter.
Repeat that four days and you will understand why people come for two weeks and leave after four months.
What Canggu is bad at
Be fair to yourself before booking:
- Swimming. Rips, shore dump, dark sand. It is a surf coast.
- Traffic. The 4–7pm window is genuinely draining.
- Quiet. Construction is constant. Ask for a room away from the road, and bring earplugs.
- Culture. Canggu has almost none of Bali's ceremonial life visible day to day. That is in Ubud and the villages.
- Cheap accommodation on arrival. High-season walk-in rates are brutal.
Where the money leaks in Canggu
Canggu is full of unadvertised discounting, and almost none of it reaches you through the platform you booked on.
