Surfing in Canggu: Every Break, Graded Honestly

A surfer riding a small wave at a black sand beach break in Canggu, Bali

Canggu's whole appeal as a surf base is compression: five distinct breaks inside about two kilometres of coast, covering the full ladder from first-ever foam board to a reef wave with consequences. You can change your mind about where to surf at 6:15am and be paddling out somewhere else by 6:25.

The flip side is that the beginner wave and the reef wave are close enough that people wander from one to the other without realising the level jumped.

Here is each break, graded without the tourism gloss.

Prices 2026. Tides and swell change everything below — check both before you commit.

Batu Bolong — the learning wave

Level: absolute beginner to improver · Bottom: sand with soft reef sections · Tide: mid · Crowd: enormous

This is where most people in Bali stand up for the first time. The wave is slow, it crumbles rather than dumps, and it runs long enough that a beginner has time to think.

The crowd is genuinely huge — by 9am there can be two hundred people in the water on a 300-metre stretch. Counter-intuitively, that is part of the safety: almost everyone is on a foam board and moving slowly.

What to watch for: at low tide the reef sections on the inside come up and this stops being a soft sand break. Also the shore dump on a bigger day, which will roll you in knee-deep water while you are carrying a 9-foot board.

Best window: 6:00–8:00am. Offshore or glassy, half the crowd, and you get waves.

Old Man's — the dawn longboard wave

Level: beginner to intermediate · Bottom: sand/soft reef · Tide: mid to high · Crowd: heavy, longboard-dominated

Directly north of Batu Bolong and functionally the same coastline, but the wave is slower and longer — which makes it the longboard spot. At dawn it is the nicest wave in Canggu for anyone who can already stand up and wants to work on trimming rather than surviving.

The bar of the same name behind it is why the beach is packed at sunset and empty at 6am.

What to watch for: longboard traffic. Nine-foot logs have right of way by physics as well as etiquette, and people here are practised at taking waves early.

Berawa — the step up

Level: improver to intermediate · Bottom: sand · Tide: mid · Crowd: moderate

South of Batu Bolong, in front of the beach clubs. Punchier and faster than Batu Bolong — this is the wave for the phase where you can catch unbroken waves but cannot yet turn. Steeper takeoff, more push, less forgiveness.

On a small day it is an excellent beginner-plus wave. On a head-high day it is not a beginner wave at all, and the shore dump gets serious.

What to watch for: the beach here narrows to almost nothing at high tide in some months, and the shore break lands on a steep sand shelf.

Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan) — the real wave

Level: intermediate to advanced · Bottom: reef · Tide: mid · Crowd: moderate, local, territorial when good

Five minutes north of the beginner zone and an entirely different proposition. Echo is a reef break: it breaks harder, faster and shallower, and there is a genuine local lineup that surfs it every day.

When it is on — clean morning offshore, mid tide, decent south swell — it is the best wave in Canggu by a wide margin. When it is big, it is not a place to test yourself.

What to watch for: the reef. Booties are not a bad idea. And the priority rules here are enforced socially in a way they are not at Batu Bolong.

Pererenan and Nelayan — the quieter ones

Level: intermediate · Bottom: reef and sand mix · Crowd: light

North again. Fewer people, less consistent, occasionally very good. Worth checking on your way past if you have your own board and can read whether a spot is working. Not somewhere to book a lesson.

The Canggu day, hour by hour

Time Conditions Who is out
5:45–7:30 Glassy or light offshore. Best of the day. Locals, longboarders, serious people
7:30–9:00 Still good, filling up fast Everyone
9:00–11:00 Crowded, wind starting Lessons, hundreds of foamies
11:00–15:00 Usually onshore and messy Almost nobody worth copying
15:00–18:00 Can clean up late, especially dry season Post-work crowd

If you take one thing from this page: surf before 8am. Everything about Canggu — wave quality, crowd, wind, heat, traffic — is better at 6:30 than at 10.

Season

  • April to October (dry season): the west coast's time. Offshore mornings, consistent south swell, this is Canggu's peak.
  • November to March (wet season): westerly winds blow Canggu's mornings out more often. It still works, especially early, but on blown-out days the answer is to drive east to Sanur, Keramas or Nusa Dua where the same wind is offshore. Almost no visitors know this, which is why the east coast is empty in wet season.

Water is 27–29°C all year. Board shorts and a long-sleeve rash guard is the whole wardrobe.

Board shops worth knowing: Drifter in Berawa, Deus Ex Machina, and the row of rental stands directly on Batu Bolong beach — the beach stands are cheapest and negotiable, especially for multi-day.

The unadvertised discount: nearly every school prices a 3 or 5-lesson package well below the per-lesson rate, and nearly none of them display it. Ask before you book the first one.

Hazards specific to Canggu

  • Shore dump. The sand shelf is steep in places. Most Canggu injuries happen in waist-deep water, not out the back.
  • Black sand heat. By 11am the sand is genuinely painful barefoot.
  • Wet season water quality. After heavy rain the river mouths push debris and runoff onto the beach. Give it 24 hours after a big storm, and do not surf with an open cut.
  • Scooter parking at the beach paths. Petty theft happens. Do not leave anything in the seat compartment.
  • The 4–7pm road. Not a water hazard, but a 3km ride back can take 35 minutes.

After the session

Canggu's post-surf economy is where the money quietly goes: a big breakfast, a massage for the shoulders, and sunset drinks. All three have prices that move depending on when you show up and whether you ask.

Massage in Canggu runs 120,000–250,000 IDR for 60 minutes at a local place — and the 1–4pm slots, when every therapist is idle, are frequently discounted 30–50% without any sign on the door. Happy hour across the Batu Bolong and Berawa strip is typically a 2-for-1 window from around 4pm to 7pm. Beach club day beds run on minimum spend, while a hotel pool day pass 200 metres inland is often half the price for the same swim.

Last Call Bali tracks exactly that — what Canggu venues are discounting right now, spa slots, happy hours, 2-for-1s and day passes, connecting you straight to the venue on WhatsApp. No commission, no booking fee.
