Sport in Bali Beyond Surfing: Padel, Muay Thai, Running and Football

Floodlit padel courts at dusk in Canggu, Bali

Short answer: Bali is not only surfing. Padel is the fastest-growing sport in Canggu, run clubs are free and welcome anyone, Muay Thai costs a fraction of Western prices for genuinely good coaching, and pick-up football and five-a-side run constantly through community groups.

And the practical reason to care beyond fitness: sport is a better way to meet people here than bars. You are doing something side by side rather than performing a conversation, and you come back next week.

Last checked: 13 August 2026. Prices in Indonesian rupiah.

Padel — the thing that happened while nobody was looking

Padel has grown faster in Canggu over the past couple of years than anything else in the fitness category. Courts have opened, leagues run, and the social design of the sport — always doubles, always four people, rallies rather than aces — makes it unusually good for meeting people.

How it works practically: court hire is per hour and split between four, so 60,000–130,000 IDR each. If you arrive without three friends, the answer is a social or open session organised through a club or a community group, where you are put into games by rough level. Beginner sessions are common and genuinely beginner.

Bring: court shoes, and expect to be lent a racket for your first session. Book ahead for evening slots — floodlit courts after work are the peak.

Run clubs — free, and the best social entry point on the island

Canggu and Uluwatu both have free community run clubs. No signup, no fee, all levels welcome, several sessions a week, usually finishing with food or a drink.

For a lot of people arriving alone, this is the single most effective thing they do in their first week — more than any paid meetup or membership. See how to meet people in Bali.

On running in Bali generally:

  • Sanur is the best place to run in Bali, by a wide margin: a flat, car-free, seven-kilometre paved beachfront path.
  • Canggu works at dawn — along the beach and out on the rice-field roads before the traffic. After 8am the heat, humidity and exhaust make it genuinely unpleasant.
  • Ubud has hills and the Campuhan Ridge, which is beautiful at 6am and exposed by 8.
  • Run before sunrise or not at all. This is not toughness advice, it is a temperature and air-quality one.

Muay Thai and boxing

Bali has a real martial arts scene with experienced Thai and Indonesian trainers, and prices that are a fraction of Western equivalents. Drop-in 120,000–200,000 IDR, monthly 1,200,000–2,200,000, private sessions 250,000–500,000.

Why it suits a Bali stay: classes run twice daily, beginner sessions are genuinely beginner, the community around a gym is tight, and an hour of pads is a complete workout in a climate where running is only viable at dawn.

Same rule as every fitness category here: the monthly beats drop-ins from about three sessions a week, and multi-class packs exist and are rarely advertised. Ask at the desk. See gym day passes in Bali.

Football and team sport

Pick-up games are organised almost entirely through area WhatsApp and Facebook groups — Canggu has several regular weekly games, and turnover means new players are always welcome.

Five-a-side pitches can be booked by the hour at 300,000–600,000 IDR, split between ten people. Denpasar has more and cheaper facilities than Canggu if you are willing to ride.

Beach volleyball happens informally at Canggu, Seminyak and Sanur in the late afternoon, and joining in is a matter of asking.

The others, briefly

  • Tennis — courts at hotels and in Sanur and Nusa Dua, 150,000–400,000 IDR an hour. Play early; midday is brutal.
  • Cycling — Sanur for flat coastal riding, Ubud and the central highlands for genuine climbs. Road bike rental 150,000–350,000 a day. Traffic in the south makes route choice important.
  • Climbing — an indoor gym scene exists around Denpasar. Limited outdoor climbing on the limestone.
  • Skate — Canggu has a real skate scene and park.
  • Golf — courses at Nusa Dua, in Tabanan and at Bedugul in the highlands, green fees 800,000–2,500,000 IDR.
  • Padel's cousins — pickleball courts have started appearing too, cheaper and even more beginner-friendly.

When to train, given the climate

Time Suitability
5:30–8am Best. Cool, quiet roads, clean air
8–11am Warm but workable indoors or under cover
11am–3pm Avoid outdoors entirely; indoor aircon only
4–6pm Good for indoor and covered sport; traffic outside
6–9pm Peak for courts and gyms — floodlit padel, evening classes

Heat and humidity are the binding constraint on all outdoor sport in Bali, more than fitness is. Hydrate before, not just after, and expect your first two weeks of performance to be worse than at home.

Good for / skip if

Prioritise sport if: you are arriving alone and want a social base fast, you want a routine that survives the climate, or you want to spend evenings doing something other than drinking — which in Canggu takes an actual decision.

Skip the paid options if: budget is tight. Run clubs are free, beach volleyball is free, and a monthly gym membership at 900,000–2,000,000 IDR covers most of what you need.

The honest negatives

  • Heat and humidity limit everything outdoors to before 8am and after 5pm.
  • Air quality on the main roads in south Bali is poor at peak traffic. Run inland or on the beach.
  • Court and class booking apps fill a day ahead for evening slots at the popular Canggu venues.
  • Facility quality varies, particularly at the cheap end.
  • Injury and insurance: most travel policies cover gym and sport injury but treat surfing and motorcycle accidents very differently. Know which bucket you are in. See healthcare in Bali.
  • Padel has got expensive as demand outpaced court supply. Social sessions are the value option.
  • Uluwatu and Sanur are thin for organised sport. Surfing and running respectively do most of the work.

Where the money leaks

Same mechanic as everything else in Bali: the drop-in rate is the tourist rate. Weekly passes and class packs run 25–50% below drop-ins at gyms, martial arts gyms and studios, three-month prepays take another 15–25% off, and padel social sessions cost less per person than splitting a court four ways. None of it is on a website — you get it by asking at the desk.

Last Call Bali tracks what gyms, studios, courts and recovery spaces across Canggu, Pererenan, Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Sanur are discounting right now, with a direct WhatsApp line to the venue. No commission, no booking fee, no card details.

How this page is verified

Prices come from contacting courts, gyms and clubs directly across Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur and Denpasar, cross-checked with current participants, and re-checked monthly. Ranges rather than single figures, because court and class pricing here is seasonal and moves with demand — padel in particular has repriced upward as demand outran supply.

We deliberately do not name specific clubs, gyms or run groups. Free community groups change meeting points and schedules, gyms open and close, and a stale list sends people to a session that stopped happening. Ask in an area WhatsApp group or at a coworking space; whatever is currently running will be the first thing anyone tells you.
